Trailer Thursday: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”

I know I’m a week late on this one, but seeing as we have watched this badass new Star Wars trailer probably a hundred times this last week alone there was just no way I could not share it here. In the past week I have been training my own little Jedi on the history and lore of the Star Wars universe and priming her for what to expect from the next chapter, J.J. Abrams hotly-anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Hell, I even sat through The Return of the Jedi with her on Sunday. Greta loved it, but let me tell ya, Jedi has not aged well, amigos. There were a few scenes that were so bad they actually made me question whether The Phantom Menace really is the worst film in the series. I mean, some of those “heavy acting” scenes with Luke and Leia…yikes! Needless to say, Greta and I are ready to get this new trilogy started already! Seriously, when can we get in line?!

And now, even though you’ve probably seen it a hundred plus times already yourself, here again is the second official trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Happy Trailer Thursday!

Oscar Ads (2015)

Forget the Super Bowl, man. This year’s Academy Awards telecast had three of the coolest, funniest and most heartfelt commercials I’ve seen all year. And best of all they came in one big beautiful clump up near the front of the show, you know, when people were still watching the Oscars! Here are my three favorite Oscar ads just in case you missed them. Enjoy!

Moms Demand Action’s cool new “Groceries not Guns” ad campaign

Like most people I know I tend to save my overtly political musings for Facebook (suck it Hobby Lobby!), but, the latest ad campaign from the Michael Bloomberg-backed gun control group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America was just too good not to share with you.

Highlighting the fact that the Krogers grocery store chain bans shirtless people, outside food and drink and skateboards from their stores but allows their patrons to carry loaded firearms while shopping, the bold, striking images in these ads say it all. This is one completely ass-backward policy, amigos! Crazy town! I only wish there was a Krogers near me that I could boycott or ride my skateboard in. And I don't even own a skateboard! Grrrr!

And while some might argue that the ads (which began running in newspapers today) are preaching to the choir, the fact that similar campaigns by the group have been effective in reversing the gun policy at national retail and restaurant chains like Chipotle, Sonic, Target and Starbucks gives me hope. So, rock on, Moms Demand Action. Dads demand it too!

To learn more about the group's “groceries not guns” campaign check out this super cool piece on today's Huffington Post.

Dove Men+Care’s “Call for Dads” TV Spot

Greta and I have been watching this sweet, beautifully produced TV spot from Dove Men+Care all week, and everytime we watch it, we cry. So, in honor of my upcoming fifth Father's Day as a dad this weekend, I figured I'd share this awesomeness with you guys as well.

Honestly, they had me at the title, but the fact that I know one of the dad's in the clip from my old Westside Dad's Meetup Group makes the clip that much more special. My buddy Trevor is the bald dude kissing his tow-headed little boy, Miles, near the middle of the commercial…you can't miss them. I think that's them in the insect costumes later on too. Either way, congrats, guys!

And to the rest of the weary, hard-working dads out there (stay-at-home and otherwise!) Happy Father's Day and enjoy the clip!

Google Zeitgeist: “Here’s to 2013!”

As we did with Christmas, Mrs. Yeti, Greta and I spent pretty much the entire weekend holed up in the living room watching movies, eating and drinking, playing video games and assembling very intricately designed LEGO playsets. And while sitting there complaining that none of the end of year wrap-up shows on TV were any good, we caught this new Google ad that captured 2013 better than any cheesy TV show ever could.

Kudos to Google for doing it again! This new ad was so beautiful it had us in tears all night. Here’s to a fun, prosperous and magical year ahead for all of us. Happy New Year!

Virgin Atlantic Mini-Movie: “Born Different”

OK, I know that a shortened version of this ad has been running on TV for months now, but, I just found this extended, mini-movie version of Virgin Atlantic’s “Born Different” ad, and I had to share it. I myself have yet to fly Virgin Airways, but, this super cool commercial puts them on the very top of my “must-fly” list. Enjoy!

New Google Chrome Ad : “Jess Time”

Longtime readers are already well aware of my deep, abiding love for a really well-made ad that packs an emotional punch. They also know that I’m a huge fan of the work Google has done in this arena for years. But, when you toss a father/daughter element into the mix, well, forget about it…

Don’t know if you’ve caught it yet, but, the new spot for Google Chrome is absolutely beautiful. Wow, I’ve already watched it a bunch of times and my sappy ass weeps like a baby every time I do. Really touching stuff, even if you’re not a post-op, emotional wreck of a stay-at-home-dad who likes to cry at computer commercials.

As I’ve pointed out before, there have been loads of new Dad-centric advertising coming down the pike this year, but, this one takes the lead by a country mile. All hail, Google Chrome!
