Princess Book Party

Speaking of Halloween costumes, Greta got to test drive her Queen Elsa costume over the weekend at the Friends of the Burbank Library's very cool Princess Book Party. Held at the Burbank Library's central branch on Glenoaks, the event featured Princess trivia, bingo, crafts, cookies, gift bags and even a visit from everyone's favorite Disney Princess/Queen du jour, Queen Elsa from Frozen! Hooray!

As you can see, Greta had an awesome time. And despite the fact that there are already piles of library books scattered all over her bedroom, we came home with another big old batch of new ones as well. Now if I could just remember when they're all due back at the library, all would be right with the world. Either way, enjoy the pics!

A Mooncake in Shanghai

I realized the other day that I don’t blog about food nearly as often as I used to on our poor neglected sister blog, so, starting today I’m going to change that. From now on, if I eat or drink something cool or unusual in my travels, you’re going to read about it. Or at the very least, have to skip over it and wait for my next post on how not to fall asleep while playing Barbies with your daughter.

Either way, expect to read a lot more about food from now on. And to get things started I’ll tell you about the best food I had on my recent trip to Shanghai, China. Yes, believe it or not, I was invited to China to moderate a panel on the Rise of Asian Cinema inflight offerings at the first ever APEX/Asia Educational Event. That’s right, they asked me to moderate too. Crazy, huh?

Anyway, the event was awesome, the people on the panel — who included an old film school buddy of mine from AFI! — we’re amazing and, even with the a smog, Shanghai was gorgeous and everything I had expected it to be. Big, fun, exciting, seedy (I’ll save my back alley fake purse shopping adventures for another post) the city had a vibe that was just kind of electrifying. Everything was just happening, like, all the time. It was awesome.

The food, however, was a totally different experience. I read somewhere recently that calling the food in China “Chinese food” was like lumping all the countries in Europe together and calling it “European food”. China is just too big for there to be any sort of cohesiveness to the culinary offerings. I mean, sure, dumplings and rice and all that are pretty standard, but as far as the main dishes go, the skies the limit, with almost every region of the country having their own specialties.

And though I sort of knew that going in, and did go so far as to put a Shanghai delicacy called “hairy crab” on my plate at the buffet line at the hotel. The hair on the crab was just too damn much for me — seriously, it looked like a mustache peeking out from under the shell! — and I didn’t eat it.

And unfortunately everything else I tried was terrible, or, I should say, not what I expected. The biggest problem I had was texture. The dumplings and wontons were either too gooey and soft or strangely tough to bite through. I know it sounds gross, but there was a stringy, bandage-like texture to the worst wontons I tried and even the ones that were mildly palatable were filled with very odd tasting meats and chicken.

In fact, almost all of the meat and chicken I had in Shanghai was questionable, at best. Someone advised me to stick with the pork offerings and it was the best advice I got all trip. It’s pretty hard to ruin pork and you can always tell what part of the pig you’re, eating especially with bacon! So, pork was the order of the day.

That said, the one food item I ate that truly rocked my world was a tasty little Chinese Mooncake I bought for like, a quarter, at a farmers market-y kind of place near my hotel.

Located at the northern end of Shanghai’s bustling Nanjing Road shopping district, the place sold all kinds of fancy teas and candy and stuff and up near the front sat a bored looking girl lording over a steaming little oven of freshly made Mooncakes. I don’t know what was in them (I’m pretty sure it was pork) but, they smelled like a dream and tasted even better. In fact, if I hadn’t just dumped $40 USD on tea inside the shop, I might have bought more than one. But, what can I say, I’m cheap.

And though the combination of flaky pastry and super yummy pork filling was delicious, I never went back and got more. I guess I just kept thinking I’d find something better. But, the sad truth is, apart from the excellent Indian curry dishes at the hotel, I never did. So, that honey of a Mooncake remains the best thing I ate in Shanghai, bar none. And, wow…what a treat it was!

Beating The Heat: Play-Doh Style!

Don’t know what the weather’s like where you’re at, but, it’s been a swampy mess down here and Greta and I have been literally melting in the heat. Proclaiming she was too hot to walk the other day, Greta actually crumpled to her knees and made me carry her to the car before ballet class.

The next day, she crawled to the back door to put her shoes on because “her feet stopped working.” and then yesterday it was so hot that it actually rained. Today too. And when I say rain, I’m not talking about deep, cleansing rain that makes the L.A. skyline all super blue. Nope. This was just enough rain to increase the swamp factor in the air and make your car looks like shit. Good times.

So, when the rain started today we decided to stay inside and color until it cooled down. And once it did, we hurried to the store to pick up something new and fun (and most importantly, cheap!) to play with. We only ventured as far as CVS, so, our options were kinda limited, but, today, luck was on our side. And somewhere between the kids crafts and fake Barbie dolls on the toy aisle, I found the perfect inside toy…the Play-Doh Fun Factory!

Longtime Play-Doh aficionados will remember the Fun Factory as the little hand pump machine with the plastic strips with different shaped holes in them. I don’t know if my brother and I ever actually owned one, but, man, did we love that thing when we were kids. Anyway, one of Greta’s friends has a vintage Fun Factory and we’ve been on the hunt for one for for weeks now.

Our only disappointment was that the 2013 edition of the Fun Factory doesn’t come with those cool little plastic scissors, but instead comes with a tiny knife. Weird huh? Other than that, the little pump still cranks out star-shaped snakes and long, curly Play-Doh hair with the best of em. So, hooray for indoor summer fun!

Oh, and in case you were wondering, Greta’s feet did start working again the other day. All I had to do was promise her a Hello Kitty popsicle and she was cured. Strange how that works, huh?

The Walking Dead…

Greta’s birthday party was almost a week ago, and while it was awesome, it was also completely exhausting. Anyone who has ever planned a kid’s birthday party themselves knows what I’m talking about: a lot of work, a lot of money, way too much to do and very little sleep. It’s like going to war. Well, OK, not that bad, but, pretty damn close. And from what I hear it gets worse when the kids get older and start inviting whole classrooms full of kids. Yikes…

Anyway, the party went off without a hitch (although Mrs. Yeti and have decided to jokingly refer to Greta’s birthday parties as “divorce makers” from here on out) and I think everyone had a lot of fun. Most especially the kids. So, yay! I’ll post pics soon. I promise! And I know I’ve said that before, but, this time, the pics have made the jump from my camera to the computer and some of them are even up on Facebook already. So, hang tight, pics really are coming this time.

The other no-so-fun thing about staging a big-ass kids party is that one, or all three of us, inevitably ends up a little sick after it’s all said and done. And this time, it’s Greta and myself who caught the bug. It’s really just a cold, but, coupled with this insane heat wave we’re having — it was 91 degrees outside for most of the day today! — it’s been a really long and nasty week for both of us.

And though we did manage to make it out to the library yesterday, Greta’s runny nose peaked today and going anywhere went right out the window. No need to spread our zombie virus any further.

So, we stayed home today and drove each other crazy instead. Seriously, indoor activities lose their luster pretty quickly when it’s hot as hell outside and both of your noses are draining all day long. Urgh…talk about a germ factory. I’m surprised Mrs. Yeti hasn’t taken to sleeping on the couch!

Thankfully, my most taxxing plans this weekend involve plopping a giant slab of corned beef into a crockpot full of boiling water. And lemme tell ya, Sunday can’t come soon enough.

God bless ye, St. Patrick!

Feliz Dia de los Muertos (2012)

Halloween pictures are coming, I promise! But, for now, wanted to share with you a picture I took of Greta yesterday while shopping for Pan de Muertos (Bread of the Dead) for our annual Day of the Dead fiesta. Greta has been unusually interested in the concept of death lately — the sudden death of one of our elderly neighbor’s husbands last week didn’t help — so, we weren’t sure if we were going to celebrate Dia de los Muertos this year, but, seeing as death is just another fact of life, we decided to celebrate as usual.

So, I cooked up some awesome Mexican food, built a little altar with assorted mementos from our dead relatives (cats too!) and celebrated their lives with candles, food, music and, of course, that delicious sugar-coated Pan de Muertos.

Yesterday was Greta’s fourth Dia de los Muertos and though I think she is finally starting to understand what the holiday is all about, something tells me that the awesome pink bread is her favorite part of the day. Hey, it’s a start. Happy Dia de los Muertos, amigos…

Overloaded

Please forgive my absence of late. We had three big parties over three very-busy weekends in a row and I spent the last week pretty much recovering from the thrill/joy/nausea of it all. Seriously, any one of those parties (one was for the Oscars, one was for Greta’s third birthday and one was for my Grandma’s 90th birthday) would have tired a normal person out. But three parties over three weekends was just plain crazy.

Combine all that with the fact that Mrs. Yeti has been working like a beast (long hours, six-day workweeks, you name it) which means I’ve been doing the brunt of the toddler wrangling, and, well, let’s just say even my best Barbie scenarios are wearing kinda thing these days.

On the upside, the cat is using her box like a pro (or, you know, like a regular cat) and Greta has declared me her “best friend” four days running, so, there’s always that…

“Downton Abbey” Paper Dolls

At last, someone has found a way to keep a squirming toddler occupied while Mommy and Daddy watch “their stories” on Sunday nights! That’s right, just in time for the Season Two season finale, some crafty bugger named Kyle Hilton has designed printable “Downton Abbey” paper dolls. Yay!

And not only are they printable, but they are also 100% free! You know, until the PBS pledge drive lawyers get a hold them, then you’ll probably have to donate a hundred bucks or something to get the set. So, if you’re a “Downton Abbey” fan (or a parent trying to keep your chatty kid from ruining the perfectly Edwardian mood every Sunday night!) or both, I suggest you download the whole lot of them by clicking here immediately.

My favorite is the evil-doer twin pack of Thomas and O’Brien (their accessories are hilarious!) but what I’m really hoping they’ll release next is a special Spanish Flu edition where you can swap out Countess Cora and Carson’s pale, bloody-nosed heads with perfectly healthy ones when they recover. Now that, I might actually even pay for!
