Planet Greta: The Return!

They say that when one door closes another one opens, and I guess the same thing could be said about blogs. This week we are finally closing the doors on our original Make.See.Eat.Do blog — which started all this bloggy awesomeness way back in 2007 — just in time to open the door to the official “reboot” of our Planet Greta photo blog.

That’s right, amigos, that old baby photo blog that hasn’t been updated since Greta’s third birthday (!) has been reborn as the official homebase for Greta’s super cool YouTube video series, titled, appropriately enough, Planet Greta! Hooray!

And lest you think I pushed Greta into the internet video making biz, let me assure you that the entire venture was her idea. Well, except for the name, which wasn’t as sparkly and girlie as she wanted, but, seemed like a perfect fit for all the crazy stuff she wants to highlight on her “show.”

And speaking of crazy stuff, Planet Greta runs the gamut, baby! It’s not exactly great art, but, Greta and I have been having a lot of fun making videos about everything from collectible toy “unboxings” to constructing cool LEGO Friends sets and we even have an episode featuring a cereal eating competition with her “cowboy cousin” Colton. In other words, Planet Greta is just as fun, goofy and eclectic as Greta herself. So, enjoy! And if you like what you see, please feel free to “like” us on YouTube. Thanks!

“Country: Portraits of an American Sound” at the Annenberg Space for Photography

Last weekend, we headed to the Annenberg Space for Photography in Century City to check out their spanking new exhibit, “Country: Portraits of an American Sound” and lemme tell ya, it kicked ass. Seriously, even people who don’t like country music will enjoy the very cool array of photographs on display. And if you love old school Grand Ole Opry stars like Ernest Tubb, Loretta Lynn, George Jones and Patsy Cline as much as we do, well, prepare to be dazzled.

Featuring work from a number of photographers covering the country music scene in Nashville and beyond, the show spans the post WWII period straight on through to today. One of Greta’s favorite shots was a very recent portrait of that little firecracker Kasey Musgraves. Musgraves took home the Grammy for Best Country Album earlier this year for her boot-stompingly good major label debut “Same Trailer Different Park.” And of you haven’t heard her music yet, well…you will!

My favorite pic was the insanely cool Tammy Wynette shot featured on the poster below and an action pic of Loretta Lynn jumping for joy after hearing that she’d been asked to join the regular cast at the Opry. Classic! And if you love Johnny Cash like we do, there are some great photos of him through the years as well. Honestly, every photo in the show is amazing and the documentary the Annenberg produced in conjunction with The Country Music Hall of Fame is positively riveting. Seriously good stuff all around.

And those with wee ones will appreciate the show’s super cool hidden item game which encourages kids to find items from a brochure in the photos on display. Greta loved it and actually, it was fun for adults too. In fact, some of the items were so difficult to find that we had to ask for help.

So, if you live in the area (and even if you don’t!) get thee to the Annenberg Space for Photography and check out this little gem of a show for yourself. The cost of admission is free and parking, with museum validation, is only one dollar. So, how can you lose?

I should warn you though, this show will fuel your desire for country jams like never before, we’ve been playing nothing but Dolly, Emmylou Harris and Porter Wagoner all week…it’s been awesome!

“Christmas Wishes” on KOST (2013)

Not sure if you guys remember this or not, but, every year around Christmas time we get loads of comments on our sister blog about a post I wrote five years ago (!) about KOST 103.5’s “Christmas Wishes” program. Most of the people commenting seem to think that our blog is somehow connected to KOST and ask for all sorts of crazy things for Christmas.

It’s actually kind of sad sometimes, especially the people who write about losing spouses and stuff…yikes…if it’s true, my heart goes out to them. But on the other hand, part of me wonders what the hell they are thinking coming to our blog for “Christmas Wishes.” I mean, if they took the time to actually read the original blog post they’d see I was writing about how much we love listening to the “Christmas Wishes” on the radio, not granting them! Urgh…

Thankfully, we haven’t gotten nearly as many comments this year as we did in year’s past — I only say thankfully because they do kind of make me feel guilty sometimes, like it’s the universe’s way of asking me to play Santa or something — but, the one’s we did get are pretty good, so, I’m going to repost them below. And if I had my wish this Christmas, I would bring both of these poor saps a couple of commas and maybe a period or two for Christmas, because, as you can see, they could really use them. Merry Christmas, everyone!

Haunted by “Christmas Wishes”

Wow, in my wildest dreams, I would have never thought that this innocent pre-Greta blog post from four years ago (click below) would continue to generate so much activity all these years later.

“Christmas Wishes on KOST 103.5” – December 19, 2008

But, for better or worse, every year at this time I get tons of comments from people who somehow think that I am the one granting Christmas wishes on KOST 103.5 FM. Oh, if I only could, my friends, I would, but, I was simply blogging about how much I loved KOST’s all-Christmas music format. That’s all. And, by the way, I still love it. So does Greta!

Anyway, the comments have been flowing in to our poor, abandoned sister blog Make.See.Eat.Do. again this year, so, I wanted to be sure and share this strange phenomenon with you all as well. The funny thing is that most of these people don’t even leave a contact number for me to reach them at, so, I don’t know how they expect to get the wishes they asked for, you know, actually granted. I guess they’re relying on the magic of Christmas. Either way, if anyone reading wants to answer some of these often very sad email pleas for wish granting, let me know…

In the meantime, I hope your holidays are going well. I’m slammed with work at the moment, but, will re-emerge from my shell soon. Until then, follow the link (included again below) to the original story and make sure and read all the crazy comments!

Michael Bublé Christmas Special airs tonight! (via make.see.eat.do)

Spent the weekend putting up the tree, decorating the house and trying to explain to Greta why we don’t wear our Christmas stockings on our actual feet. She calls them “socks” and, well, why shouldn’t she? Explaining the whole thing to her last night, Mrs. Yeti and I kept looking at one another, like: “Wow, this is kind of a weird tradition…no wonder she’s confused!”

Anyway, Greta and I are still putting the final touches on Christmas-izing our merry little household, so, you’ll have to forgive me if I cut corners a bit and post something from our sister blog here today. I know it’s totally cheating, but, I promise to dazzle you with some exclusive content real soon. So, for now, Merry Christmas and enjoy the link!
