The Final Countdown…

With Greta’s kindergarten starting next Monday, today marks the official beginning of our last full week together before “big girl” school starts. And while I’m very proud of the impossibly sweet, funny, intelligent young lady Greta has become over the past five years, part of me is dreading the many changes to come. I know we’ll always have plenty of time together but I also know that things change when kids go to school. I guess I’m just kinda bummed that the first great chapter of our wild and crazy time together is coming to an end.

With a few notable exceptions, I’ve been by Greta’s side almost every day since she was born and I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything in the world. I know it sounds corny, but, she’s been my favorite “production” of all. She has also been, quite literally, my life for the past five years.

And though I’m sad and happy and kind of terrified (especially of getting up early every day to get her to school on time! Yikes!) by the strange and winding road ahead of us, I’m looking forward to it as well. Every day with Greta is an adventure and no school schedule is gonna change that!

So, here’s to our last week of total freedom together, sweetie! Let’s get busy!

Philip Seymour Hoffman (1967-2014)

I don’t know about you guys, but, I’m still kind of reeling from the death yesterday of Philip Seymour Hoffman. Not only was he one of my all-time favorite actors, but he was also the kind of reliably brilliant character actor (like John Goodman) that you’d hope to see onscreen in killer parts large and small for years to come. Sadly, that was not to be…

Although it’s little comfort right now, the fact that Hoffman left behind such a remarkable and diverse body of work is pretty awesome. He was usually my favorite character in anything he was in, and I loved him in everything, but, my favorite role of Hoffman’s is probably his turn as a home health care nurse in Paul Thomas Anderson’s crazy masterpiece Magnolia.

It’s not Hoffman’s showiest role and he could easily be eclipsed by the onscreen theatrics of his co-stars Tom Cruise and Julianne Moore, but there is a quiet grace in his performance that just kills me every time I see it. It’s like you can actually feel the things he is going through. Really amazing work in a movie busting at the seams with great actors.

I also loved him in Happiness, Boogie Nights, The Savages, Doubt, The Big Lebowski, Almost Famous, Moneyball and Pirate Radio, a movie I missed the first time around and finally saw (and loved!) this past summer. The funny thing is that when I looked up his filmography just now, some of the best stuff Hoffman did onscreen was in tiny parts in big movies that I barely remember seeing. And if you ask me, that’s the mark of a truly great actor.

Rest in peace, PSH. You left us way too soon…

Subaru’s “Cut The Cord” ad

This has been a very challenging week for Mrs. Yeti and myself. Greta is turning four on Saturday and though it’s been super fun prepping for the party and picking out plates and cool stuff for the goodie bags and everything, it’s also been crazy emotional for both of us. Our little baby is going to be four and neither one us knows where the time went.

I actually started crying when one of Greta’s Tinkerbell songs came on the radio in the kitchen the other day. Greta just walked in and stared at me, like: “WTF, dude? This song isn’t that good.” It was hilarious. And while I know it’s good that she’s growing up and getting older and possibly starting pre-school in a couple of months, it’s also really hard to face the fact that time is flying by at a merciless clip these days. Things are just happening too fast and it sucks.

I’m not sure what it is about this birthday that makes it more poignant than the previous three, but, something about four just feels old and, honestly, I’m a wreck. And then I saw this car commercial the other day, it made things even worse. Man, Subaru knows how to hit a SAHD where it really hurts…I cry every time I watch this sweetly beautiful little commercial. Oh, God, here I go again…

Anyway, enjoy the clip and if you have infants or toddlers at home, love the shit out of them because, trust me, time flies!
